Sharing Insights
The John Rex Endowment has the privilege of supporting organizations who join with us to create an environment where children and families in greater Wake County live healthy lives. In our pursuit, we pride ourselves on being a learning organization — one that constantly strives to improve based on insights gained from all experiences. In this section we provide grant project updates, stories reflecting what we and our grantees are learning, plus reports and resources on child health.
Building to Impact: Preventing Childhood Injury Meeting Report
In our commitment to preventing childhood injury, on May 2, 2014 the John Rex Endowment hosted injury prevention experts and other stakeholders for a meeting focused on creating a safe and injury-free Wake County for children. A Profile of Wake County Childhood Injury and Injury Prevention
An early step in our work is to gain an understanding of those currently involved in injury prevention activities and the nature of the activities being done. A Profile of Wake County Childhood Injury and Injury Prevention is the result of that work.
Preventing Child Pedestrian Injuries and Fatalities in Wake County
A grant awarded to the UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) resulted in a baseline assessment of Wake County child pedestrian crashes and the establishment of a multi-disciplinary coalition that worked to reduce injuries through outreach, fostering cross-agency partnerships and policy changes.
Approaches to Injury Prevention
We believe in supporting opportunities for health promotion and prevention. This statement is one of our four guiding principles and is fundamental in how we approach our work. A resource that we find helpful as a reference for multifaceted approaches to injury prevention is the 1999 Prevention Institute article, The Spectrum of Prevention: Developing a Comprehensive Approach to Injury Prevention by Larry Cohen and Susan Swift.
Indirect Expense Rates
The John Rex Endowment believes it is critical for us to cover direct expenses of a grant as well as indirect expenses that are necessary to support the work being done.
Prevent Child Maltreatment
The statewide strategic plan to reduce child maltreatment and secure family well-being is available online. The plan, Task Force on Essentials for Childhood: Safe, Stable, and Nurturing Relationships and Environments to Prevent Child Maltreatment, offers recommendations for implementation within the areas of raising awareness and promotion, using data to inform actions, and changing social norms and policy.
